Project Summary

Alberta’s volunteer firefighters are the heroes we rarely hear about, yet we unknowingly watch them in our news broadcasts on a daily basis referred to simply as firefighters. The difference is they have regular jobs, yet spend up to 400 hours a year risking their lives as unpaid volunteers. They are the 9000 members of Alberta’s 390 volunteer fire departments who step out of work and family life, day or night, to help their neighbors. Covering almost 90% of Alberta’s landmass, it is a volunteer firefighter watching over you every time you leave the city limits. To support our dedicated volunteer firefighters, a calendar has been created to honor their commitment to our communities and our province. Proceeds from The Fire Within calendar will train volunteer firefighters, and equip them with the kind of state-of-the-art technology required to save lives. Municipal budgets allow these volunteers to do their jobs; supporting this program helps them do it better. Perhaps most importantly this calendar honors the countless heroes who answer the call of duty day or night by telling their stories.

Some facts about volunteer firefighters you may not know:

- Across Canada over 127,000 volunteer firefighters proudly protect our communities and highways

- Approximately 3500 of Canada’s 4000 fire departments are volunteer departments

- Of Alberta’s 12,000 firefighters over 9000 are volunteer

- 80% of Canada’s landmass is covered by volunteer firefighters

This calendar will help raise the profile of the volunteer firefighters of southern Alberta and the important role they play in our community. As the calendar’s theme suggests, these are people just like you and me who work regular jobs, have regular families, and do regular things. But when a call comes over the radio, they drop everything to help others. That’s the Fire Within.
